So Get started …..Let’s Play Some Hockey !
Hockey at Port Washington is youth ice hockey for the fun of it. Our skaters love the sport because they are all given a chance to learn, play, and succeed – no matter what their level of skill may be. Players are able to skate and compete in situations that promote improvement — resulting in their being happy, enthusiastic and motivated to continue to get better.
Youth Ice Hockey Programs at Family Skating
Beginner Ice Hockey is where the hockey fun begins…Even our most skilled players started out in our hockey clinics learning the basics. The beginner hockey clinic is intended for players with limited hockey experience. Players should have some basic skating skills. Those who have never skated should enroll for classes in our Skating School to get going on ice before attempting the hockey clinic. Skills focus on forward and backward skating, stopping, proper body positioning, basic stick handling and passing. Your child will have fun while improving skills!

The players are starting to look like players as their skills and hockey sense improve. This clinic is great for the slightly older and more experienced skater – typically playing in the House League or on a Middle School team. Players begin to focus on puck skills and are introduced to the competitive aspects of the sport.
Intermediate hockey is intended for players with 2+ years of hockey experience. Skills taught include forward & backward crossovers, pivoting, lateral starts/stops, stickhandling moves, passing and shooting.
Each Session (Fall and Winter) consists of 14 one-hour classes. There is an added session that continues through the Spring.

House League Overview
Our House League teaches the game of hockey and develops the understanding of hockey rules, position play, teamwork, sportsmanship – and above all, just having fun!
While competition is a natural part of any sport, our emphasis is on skill development and establishing respect for opponents and the game itself. Our coaches are instructed to allocate playing time as evenly and fairly as possible.
We hold evaluations before teams are formed for all our leagues – Fall/Winter, Spring, and Summer. These evaluations are designed to:
- Encourage the formation of evenly skilled teams for balanced competition
- Give the prospective players the confidence that they can be successful playing in the league
- Allow players “on the cusp” to select the proper group to play with
Fall House League:
There are two divisions in our Fall House League – age 8 and under, age 9 and older. While divisions are based on age, the player’s skill and size are also factored in, along with consideration for siblings, friendships and carpools . Each division usually consists of 4 teams, with roster size between 12 and 16 players per team. Our program includes participation in one weekly skill clinic, and one weekend game. Clinics start the week of Oct. 16, games start Oct. 29. The season concludes with a mini-tournament the first week in March.
Players may elect to attend pre-season clinics beginning in September for a modest up charge.
Spring House League:
Spring House League Evaluations – Sunday, March 18, 2018.
Enjoy playing while the pro teams go on the run to the Stanley Cup !
The Spring League includes a dedicated practice day for each team along with games on the weekend. Teams are formed in two divisions with players divided by age and ability. The schedule is set up to avoid conflicts with most outdoor sports. Clinics and games start March 20. The season concludes with the “Clash of the Creatures” mini-tournament in June. MORE INFO
